Welcome to Animations!
Animations is a quarterly online magazine run by the Puppet Centre Trust. It is a voice for contemporary puppetry and related theatre forms, offering discussion and debate, reviews, and news from the puppet community and elsewhere. It’s an essential read for anyone interested in puppetry in all its diverse manifestations. Animations Online aims to represent the full spectrum of professional practice, from traditional puppetry to experimental visual theatre using puppetry or animation.
In this edition, Seeing the Light by Alissa Mello reports from the Manipulate Visual Theatre Festival 2008 which took place in Dundee in January 2008. There’s also an artist’s diary from Toby Olié, who gives a fascinating insight into the devising process of the National Theatre/ Handspring Puppet Company production War Horse. Our Company Profile is of those masters of stage and screen animation, Forkbeard Fantasy, who have just finished a tour of their latest show Invisible Bonfires.
In our Reviews section you’ll find reports from a hefty selection of shows seen at the London International Mime Festival 2008, including Faulty Optic’s Dead Wedding, Teatro Corsario’s Aullidos, and Sarah Wright’s Silent Tide. We also bring you reviews of Punchdrunk and Pickled Image, and continuing our policy of extending our coverage to other puppet-related events, a review of an interesting contemporary toy theatre exhibition: Daniel Barker’s The Little Theatre of Disease and Desire.
The News and Noticeboard section is the place to read about the current and future plans of puppeteers and puppet-theatre companies, and to catch up on other news, events and opportunities.
We also have details here of how you can order a copy of our current edition of Animations in Print (Vol 1). Full details on purchasing Vol 2 (published May 2008) will be in the next edition of Animations Online, but pre-order enquiries are welcome to:
