Welcome
to Animations!
Animations
is a quarterly online magazine run by the Puppet
Centre Trust. It is a voice for contemporary
puppetry and related theatre forms, offering discussion and
debate, reviews, and news from the puppet community and elsewhere.
It’s an essential read for anyone interested in puppetry
in all its diverse manifestations. Animations Online aims
to represent the full spectrum of professional practice, from
traditional puppetry to experimental visual theatre using
puppetry or animation.
Features
in this edition of Animations: To
Use or Not To Use – Janet Lee and Nigel
Luck on puppetry and appropriation; Play,
Process, Product – Adam Bennet from DNA
reflects on an influential conference appearance by the legendary
Robert Lepage.
Puppets,
Actors and Children’s Theatre is a Training
and Professional Development special in which Matthew
Isaac Cohen reflects on two linked puppetry events held in
London at Central School of Speech and Drama and The Little
Angel Theatre.
There’s also a Preview of Burkett
in Britain! – Beccy Smith on the enfant
terrible of marionette theatre, Ronnie Burkett, who returns
to these shores this spring.
Our Company Profile by Penny Francis is ofthe
pride of Wales, Small
World Theatre.
From the Frontline brings you puppeteer,
maker and co-director of Pickled Image, Dik Downey, who is Home
From the Land of Ice & Snow.
In our Reviews
section, there’s all sorts for all tastes,
including the Phillipe Genty at the London International Mime
Festival, doo-cot’s Fold Your Own, the delightful children’s
show Shoe Baby, and Independent Opera’s Orlando.
The News
and Noticeboard section is the place to read
about the current and future plans of puppeteers and puppet-theatre
companies, and to catch up on other news, events and professional
development opportunities – including Puppetry
in Progress – a series of illuminating
talks delivered by puppetry’s leading lights and brought
to you by Royal Holloway, University of London, The Puppet
Centre Trust and London Centre for Arts and Cultural Enterprise.

So that’s the Spring 2007 edition of Animations Online
for you. The Midsummer edition will be posted up 22 June.
In
the meantime, we are pleased to announce the publication in
April 2007 of Animated Encounters – a review of puppetry
and related arts. This is Volume 1 of our eagerly awaited
Animations In Print series, which will be produced annually.
With a theme of puppetry in relation to other artforms, it
features a selection of newly-commissioned articles and other
tempting treats, including: pieces by both John Fox and Ken
Campbell; an interview with Anthony Minghella and Carolyn
Choa on the making of Madam Butterfly for ENO; a photo strip
feature from Forkbeard Fantasy; and a Timeline featuring puppetry
and animation highlights from 2006. Available to order now
from the Puppet Centre Trust.
